Military Bio: BORN SEPT. 29TH. 1917 IN MARION, IL. TO EARL & MABLE LINTON, HAD 2 BROTHERS: THERON & QUENTON, AND 1 SISTER, ETHEL MAE . MOVED TO HERRIN, IL. IN 1924 AND GRAD. HERRIN HIGH SCHOOL IN 1936 . TOOK AN INTREST IN ELECTRONICS AND WORKED FOR ALBERT ROBINSON, OWNER OF A RADIO SHOP. MARRIED MARGARET RUTH RICHMOND FROM FREEMAN SPUR, IL. AND HAD OUR FIRST OF 3 SONS, WILLIAM DWAYNE . 1941 WORKED AS TIME KEEPER ON W.P.A PUBLIC SCHOOL BUILDING UNTIL COMPLETION. AT THE TIME THE U.S.A.F. WAS NOT ACCEPTING ANY NEW PILOT APPLICATIONS AND THE R.C.A.F. HAD PEOPLE VISITING LOCAL AIRPORTS LOOKING FOR PROSPECTIVE PILOTS . WE WERE ADVISED TO GO TO CANADA TO SIGN-UP WITH THE R.C.A.F. AFTER BEING SWORN IN WE WERE SENT TO BRANDON, MANATOBA FOR GROUND TRAINING THEN TO PRINCE ALBERT, SASK. FOR FLIGHT TRAINING . AFTER COMPLETION, WAS POSTED OVERSEAS TO LLANDOW, SOUTH WALES FOR ADVANCED TRAINING IN SPITFIRES . THEN STATIONED AT DIGBY LINCOLNSHIRE, ENGLAND WITH THE 412TH SQUADRON, THEN REASSIGNED TO WELLINGORE, LINCOLNSHIRE WHERE AFTER 6 MONTHS WAS MOVED TO LEEDHAM, NORFOLK . IN MAY OF '42 WAS POSTED TO 411 SQUADRON, FLEW 290 HOURS IN SPITFIRES WITH OVER 71 HOURS OF OPERATIONAL TIME ON JULY 19 1942 SUNK A GERMAN E-BOAT AND 4 DAYS LATER SHOT DOWN A JU88 OFF THE COAST OF HOLLAND BEFORE BEING SHOT DOWN MYSELF ON AUGUST 19 1942 DURING AN ALLIED RAID ON DIEPPE, FRANCE AND CAPTURED AND HELD POW FOR 33 MONTHS AT STALAG LUFT III UNTIL LIBERATED APRIL 29 1945 . AFTER RETURNING HOME TO HERRIN, IL., WENT INTO THE ELECTRONICS BUSINESS AND WAS APPOINTED STATE AERONAUTICS INSPECTOR . HAD 2 MORE SONS, RICHARD BOYD AND DOUGLAS RICHMOND LINTON . SPENT APROX. 30 YEARS IN T.V. AND RADIO REPAIR AND RAN A COUNTY APPOINTED POSITION AS ADM. OF A GENERAL ASSISTANCE OFFICE IN MARION, IL. UNTIL THE 60S WHEN I TOOK A POSITION AS AN ARBITRATOR WITH THE DEPT. OF LABOR UNTIL MY RETIREMENT IN 1990 . SPENT 5 YEARS ON THE WILLIAMSON COUNTY AIRPORT AUTHORITY AND 22 YEARS ON THE SELECTIVE SERVICE BOARD MY WIFE, MARGARET RUTH AND I STILL LIVE IN HERRIN, IL. AND NOW HAVE 4 GRAND CHILDREN AND 6 GREAT GRAND CHILDREN. I LOVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH AVIATION AND SPORTS . HELPED FORM THE SOUTHERN ILLINOIS CHAPTER OF AX-POWS AND WAS CHAIRMAN UNTIL ITS DISOLUTION DUE TO DEMISE OF MEMBERSHIP . I AM VERY PROUD OF A STORY WRITTEN ABOUT MYSELF AND PILOT/POET, JOHN MAGEE, JR. IN THE JAN. 1993 ISSUE OF FLYING MAGAZINE . MR. MAGEE WROTE THE POEM HIGH FLIGHT AND I WAS IN FLIGHT TRAINING FORMATION WITH HIM AT THE TIME OF HIS DEATH . NOTE: DWAYNE LINTON PASSED ON JANUARY 23RD,2000 . HIS WIFE OF 63 YEARS, MARGARET RUTH LINTON DIED 25 DAYS LATER, FEBURARY 17TH, 2000 . THEY DID EVERYTHING TOGETHER ! |
